How to Rent a PO Box?

PO box service is provided by the US postal service which can keep your mail in the box, and you can pick up your mail at your convenience.


What do you need to know before applying for a PO box?

  • To apply for a PO box, you need to provide a real residential address. If you do not have a residential address, you may not be able to pass the verification. For details, please consult your local post office.
  • Make sure you meet the age requirement to apply for a PO box. You must be 18 years or older to apply for a PO Box. If you are under 18 years, please go to the local post office for help.

How to rent a PO box?

Step 1. You will need to fill out PS Form 1093. If you apply online, this form will be generated by filling in the application steps.

Tips about filling the PS Form 1093

  • Determine the size of the PO Box based on your mail volume and mail size. If the PO Box you need is unavailable, you can leave your information on the waiting list and the Post Office will contact you if there is a PO box becomes available.
  • You will need to provide two IDs for verification, one must contain your photo, and the other must contain your physical residential address.
  • You can share a PO box with others, so make sure you have a list of people who share your PO box in advance.

Step 2. Bring a copy of the PS Form 1093 along with two IDs to the post office for verification.

Tips about authentication

  • Please make sure that the applicant brings his or her ID to apply in person.
  • Some IDs cannot be used as authentication IDs, for example, the Social Security Card.
  • Authentication is handled at the window service of the post office.

Step 3. Choose the renting period and pay the fee, you will get the PO box key (or access number), the PO box number, and the PO box address.

Tips before the third step

  • Determine the renting period. Generally speaking, there may be a discount for long-term renting of PO Boxes, or you may be given some free time to use the PO Box.
  • PO Box pricing is different for each post office, you can find a few post offices to compare.

If you're moving, what to do with your PO box?

You can choose to transfer the PO Box to the city you are moving to, and apply for it at the original post office and the new post office.

Or you can close the PO Box, and the refund is as follows.

  • For 3-month renting, there is no refund.
  • For 6-month renting, you will get 50% refunds within the first three months, and after the beginning of the fourth month, no refunds will be given.
  • For 12-month renting, you will get 75% refunds within the first three months, 50% refunds between the fourth to the sixth month, 25% refunds between the seventh to the ninth month, and no refunds will be given at the beginning of the tenth month.
